Terry Rivet, who credits a Stoughton Trailers rear underride guard with saving his life in a March 20-car pileup on the New York State Thruway, was interviewed in a WHAM-ABC TV 13 news story on Tuesday about federal legislation that proposes requiring underride guards on truck trailers.
Rivet, whose Buick slid partially beneath a tractor trailer that spun out on black ice in front of him, said he believes he is alive because Stoughton Trailers' rear underride guard was designed to perform at a higher standard than federal regulations require.
Approximately 350 deaths per year occur due to crashes in which a vehicle slides beneath a tractor trailer, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
