Stoughton Trailers, LLC, was commended in TruckNews.com's transportation blog on Wednesday for making its new rear underride guard standard on all of its 2017 semitrailers without added cost or weight.
"The trailer manufacturers that have voluntarily taken steps to improve the safety of their equipment should be commended," wrote blogger James Menzies. He said these moves are especially remarkable considering trailer manufacturers like Stoughton Trailers made these safety improvements without being forced to by government standards.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also recognized the rear underride guard, giving the product the agency's TOUGHGUARD Award for its ability to prevent a range of deadly underride collisions. Stoughton Trailers was one of just five trailer manufacturers to receive the award. And Heavy Duty Trucking named the new rear underride guard to its list of the Top 20 Products of 2017.
Stoughton Trailers announced its rear underride guard news — along with details about its design improvements for the 2017 trailer line — during a press conference at the TMC Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition last month. Marianne Karth, mother to two daughters who were killed in an accident in which their vehicle slid beneath a trailer, spoke in support of the rear underride guard at the press conference.
